Research Title:

Continuous Process of Biodiesel Production Using Reactive Distillation Column with Exergy Analysis

Outline:

          Biodiesel is one among the promising renewable fuels, holding various advantages compared with fossil fuel in terms of renewability, non-toxicity, biodegradability, and sustainability characteristic. However, biodiesel production faces a challenge associated with the labor and separation cost. It is due to the fact that the most existing biodiesel production technology is batch process, which is slow, involving several separation steps, labor intensive, and low in productivity.Hence, for a large-scale production, a continuous processes are preferred over batch ones. In this work, a continuous reactive distillation process is proposed to produce biodiesel from palm oil.

         Reactive distillation (RD) is a chemical unit operation which integrates the functions of reactor and separator in one column. It therefore will reduce separation steps as well as  simplify the process flow sheet and operation. Ultimately, it results in the lower capital cost. Combining reaction and separation in single column will also shift the equilibrium to the right, enabling the reaction completion.

         In this research, a hybrid RD configuration is developed for biodiesel. The hybrid RD is developed by applying a double columns RD, equipped with pre-reactor. A novel mid-reactor is also put in between the two columns to advance the RDperformance. This attempt is expected to provide a high effective and efficient RD with high quality biodiesel product. Both experimental and simulation studies are conducted to investigate the effects of main parameters. Exergy analysis is also evaluated to find the efficient RD design.
