Title of Research

Study on Kinetics of Borneol Production from α-Pineneas Derivative Product of Turpentine.

Outline:

In Indonesia, natural resources, such as forest, are so potential to be used. With the vast forest areas in Indonesia, there are many products that can be produced from the forest, both timber and non-timber. For the pine forest, non-timber products obtained from the use of pine tree gum are the main products. One of the main results of the pine resin is turpentine.

Management of pine forest which is the raw material for making turpentine, currently handled by PT Perhutani. PT Perhutani is owned by the government thatorganizing the planning, processing, exploitation and protection of forests. Of the thre eareas, they produced as much turpentine, 5,500 tons/year (Unit I/Center Java), 37,500tons/year (Unit II/Java) and 7000tons/year (Unit III West Java, Banten). A small number of turpentines (3,000 tons/year) treated by PT Perhutani Anugerah Kimia (subsidiary of PT Perhutani) and the rest (about 94%) exported directly in the form of turpentine oil.

So far, most turpentine used to be sold directly as crude oil. Yet when we try to produce products derived from turpentine, there will be more varied utilization that automatically will also increase there sale value. Turpentine has main components of α-pinene and β-pinene. Alpha-pinene is a raw material in the manufacture of borneol. Borneol it selfis derived from turpentine products which are widely used as one of the elements needed in drugs both modern medicine and traditional medicine for various types of diseases, such as lung disease, swelling of the throat, infections, rheumatic, etc.
