Research Title
Synthesis of Bornyl Acetate from Turpentine with Sulfuric Acid Catalyst
Research Outline
Borneol can be synthesized from alpha-pinene, which is the dominant compound in oil of turpentine through two stages of the reaction of esterification and saponification. Usually this is done by making borneol auto catalytic reaction with HCl and the use of alpha-pinene which has pure or who have been separated from other components of turpentine oil and by esterification the result is bornyl chloride. Then continued by saponification of bornyl chloride. Saponification bornyl chloride is quite difficult because the Cl- bond is very stable. In this study, it tries to bornyl acetate synthesis from turpentine is reacted with acetic acid and sulfuric acid catalyst used.
Bornyl Acetate is one of the intermediate compounds produced in the synthesis of alpha-pinene borneol if the reaction of alpha-pinene with acetic acid (carboxylic acid groups) via the esterification reaction. To get borneol from turpentine, after the esterification reaction was continued saponification reaction. Turpentine that the majority of the main components are alpha-pinene reacted in batch with acetic acid and sulfuric acid catalyst added.
Turpentine is the majority of alpha-pinene react between alpha-pinene and acetic acid using sulfuric acid catalyst is expected to provide the dominant product bornyl acetate. Also expected a lot of other compounds are produced, but this study focuses on product yield of bornyl acetate.
