Research Topics

Since inisiated in October 1997, PSE research group UGM has established strategic research plans, which have designed based on the technology needs in Indonesia and implemented in sub-research topics. There are four major topics included in the strategic research topics:

1. Innovation of analysis and synthesis methodologies for industrial system.
2. Toward the eco-efficient green diesel plant (integrated first and second generation of biodiesel plant).
3. Technological innovation of production process of non-timber forest products into its valuable derivatives.
4. Integration of model, optimization, synthesis and control processes in industrial systems.

 In addition, it should be noted that the route of a technology before it came to commercial technology, including:

1. Developing technology, which consists of basic and applied researches
2. Emerging technology, an application of applied research on industrial scale
3. Commercial technology represents the commercialization of the technology that has been through phases of emerging technology.

Turpentine     

         Turpentine is one of the essential oils obtained from pine trees and is very important substance with many applications such mainly as solvent in pharmaceutical industries and in processing of oils, resins and varnishes.

         Indonesia, especially Java Island is extremely rich in pine forest resources. Substantial part of the forest resources is regularly tapped in to produce oleo pine rosin that is processed later in a few factories located close to the tapping in and collection centers across the island of Java to produce gum rosin and turpentine. Processed in four plants, Indonesia’s annual turpentine production is approximately 50,000,000 kg.

 

Integration of model, optimization, synthesis and control processes in industrial systems

Background:

            Operator Training Simulator (OTS) is application sofware developed for educating and training the process operators.  OTS enables the trainees to understand the best operating practice with care, safety, and incident free working of a unit process. It addresses the operation of various condition, including emergency operation, start-up and shut-down operation, and problems associated with plant operation. Hence, current OTS contains various models engaging all aspects concerning the operation of a process unit in a real plant in the form of softwares and hardwares.
